First, IANAL.

I don't understand why there is any controversy for STORING files on Amazon's cloud service. I can do the same thing in Google docs, MS SkyDrive, Mozy, Carbonite and CarbonitePro(!) ...

The problem must be with the player (or the ease of use that the player offers). But I could always download the music file and use my built in player.

I think you nailed it Dave, without the player it's just storage. With the player it's access to the media, in ways probably not authorized by the rightsholders that they'd much rather control.
